GPRTU Disowns GRTCC’s 20% Transport Fare Hike Announcement

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has officially distanced itself from a recent statement issued by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) announcing a 20% increase in public transport fares, scheduled to take effect on Friday, August 8, 2025.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the GPRTU described the GRTCC’s announcement as “premature and not representative of the broader transport sector.” The union emphasized that it was not consulted before the decision was made public and urged commuters to disregard the proposed fare adjustments until further notice.

“We want to make it clear to the public that GPRTU has not agreed to any fare increment,” the statement read. “Any attempt to enforce new fares without consensus among major stakeholders, including our union, is not only misleading but unfair to commuters.”

Background to the Fare Hike

The GRTCC announced the fare increase earlier this week, citing rising fuel prices, high vehicle maintenance costs, and the depreciation of the Ghana cedi as key drivers. According to the council, the adjustment was necessary to help transport operators stay afloat amid worsening economic conditions.

However, transport unions including GPRTU argue that a unilateral decision undermines collaborative governance and can erode public trust in the transport system.

GPRTU Calls for Proper Dialogue

The GPRTU called on the Ministry of Transport to intervene and facilitate an all-inclusive dialogue between stakeholders in the sector. According to the union, decisions affecting millions of daily commuters and thousands of drivers must be handled with careful consultation and transparency.

“While we acknowledge the economic challenges facing transport operators, fare increases must be done fairly and equitably,” the statement added.

Public Reaction and Uncertainty

The announcement has sparked confusion and concern among passengers, many of whom are already grappling with the high cost of living. Some drivers have expressed hesitation in enforcing the new fares due to the lack of unified backing.

What’s Next?

With the GPRTU’s disapproval now in the public domain, it is unclear whether the fare increase will go ahead as planned. The Ministry of Transport has yet to comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, the GPRTU has assured the public that it will communicate any agreed fare revisions in due course.
