Renowned boxing promoter and former British welterweight champion Amir Khan has lauded Sharaf Mahama, son of former President John Dramani Mahama, for his pivotal role in organizing the highly successful Battle of the Beasts boxing event held at Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena on June 14.

The electrifying night of boxing featured the WBC African Bridgerweight title bout, where Andrew Tabiti, an American-based fighter, defeated Ghana’s Jacob Dickson to claim the belt before a packed arena.

Sharaf Mahama’s Vision Wins International Praise

Speaking to Talk Sport, Khan praised Sharaf and his brother Shahid Mahama for collaborating with AK Promotions through their firm Legacy Rise Sports to bring elite boxing action to Ghana.

“If you look at other promoters like Eddie [Hearn], Frank [Warren], they will never think about coming to Ghana… no one looks at Ghana. So we decided, why don’t we come to Ghana?” Khan said.

“The President’s sons, Sharaf and Shahid, have been so helpful. When I met them, they said let’s do a show here together and obviously, we pushed it,” he added.

Anthony Joshua and Icons Add Star Power

The event attracted global attention with Anthony Joshua, former unified heavyweight champion, gracing the occasion. Joshua also paid a courtesy visit to former President Mahama at the Jubilee House ahead of the fight.

Among other notable attendees were Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, boxing legend Azumah Nelson, and GFA President Kurt Okraku, adding prestige to the event.

Reigniting Ghana’s Boxing Heritage

The Battle of the Beasts was more than just a sporting spectacle; it was a strategic move to spotlight Ghana as a viable destination for major boxing events, rekindling its famed boxing legacy.

Sharaf Mahama’s rising profile as a sports visionary is seen as a catalyst for future international bouts in Ghana, with many hopeful that this partnership model can fuel sustained sports development.

As the cheers fade at Bukom Arena, Ghana’s re-emergence on the world boxing map is undeniable — driven by bold new promoters ready to tap its rich potential.
