INTERPOL Arrests 3 in Ghana Over Stolen Nigerian Government Vehicles

INTERPOL operatives have arrested three suspects in Accra, Ghana, over the theft of Nigerian government vehicles.

The arrest was the result of a joint operation between INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja and their Ghanaian counterparts, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed.

High-Profile Recovery: Stolen Toyota Prado Traced to Ghana

According to Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a 2020 Toyota Prado stolen during a robbery in Abuja — and belonging to a Federal Government agency — was recovered from the suspects.

“The vehicle was successfully sent back to Nigeria and handed over to the relevant agency,” Adejobi stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

The suspects were arraigned in a Ghanaian court following their arrest and the vehicle’s recovery.

Toyota Hilux Tracked to Niger Republic

In a separate operation, INTERPOL NCB Abuja recovered a 2018 Toyota Hilux, also stolen in Abuja’s Utako District on October 18, 2024. After a coordinated investigation with INTERPOL’s NCB in Niamey, the vehicle was traced to Agadez, Niger Republic, and later recovered at the Nigeria-Niger border.

It has since been returned to the rightful agency.

Ongoing Search for Two More Vehicles

Authorities are still pursuing the recovery of two additional vehicles — a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV — stolen in Abuja in May 2025 and suspected to be sold in Niger Republic.

IGP Praises INTERPOL, Calls for More Cooperation

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun praised the successful joint operations and commended INTERPOL for their relentless work.

He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to combating transnational crimes, emphasizing stronger collaboration with international security agencies.

Egbetokun also urged Nigerians to register their vehicles on the police electronic platforms to enhance recovery efforts and deter theft.
