The Benue State Police Command announced the arrest of 14 individuals linked to the hijacking of a peaceful protest by youth in Makurdi on Sunday.

The Benue State Police Command announced the arrest of 14 individuals linked to the hijacking of a peaceful protest by youth in Makurdi on Sunday.
The police said the suspects blocked a road in Apir, a suburb of Makurdi, forcing a truck to stop. They then set the truck on fire, trapping the driver inside, who has not been identified.
This information was shared in a statement by the police spokesman, Udeme Edet, and made available on Sunday. She assured the public that the suspects would face prosecution as investigations continue to identify others involved and those who incited the violence.
The statement explained, “The Benue Police Command recognizes a demonstration that happened on June 15, 2025, where people gathered at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi to raise concerns over recent security issues in the state.
While we respect the right to peaceful protest, such events must stay lawful and peaceful. Once the police got intelligence about the protest, tactical teams were immediately sent to monitor and control the situation.”
It added that the police chief, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, visited the protest site with the Deputy Governor, Barr. John Ode. They met with some demonstrators and urged calm.
However, the crowd refused to listen, and some disruptors tried to attack the deputy governor. Police responded quickly with non-lethal measures, including smoke and water cannons, to protect the deputy and clear the scene. No injuries were reported during the intervention.
Later, a different group of troublemakers reportedly sympathetic to the protest blocked a road in Apir. They stopped a truck and set it on fire with the driver trapped inside.
So far, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection to both incidents. The police said they will prosecute the suspects and continue to hunt for others behind the violence.
The police reaffirmed their support for lawful protests and condemned violence and destruction. The statement ended by praising peaceful protesters and assuring residents of efforts to keep the area safe and peaceful.
