Curtains rise on Ghana Theatre Festival 2025 with tribute to Ben Abdallah
Six Days of Drama, Dance and Heritage as Theatre Festival Opens

The 11th edition of the Ghana National Theatre Festival was officially launched in Accra on Tuesday by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie.
Held under the theme “Showcasing the Rich Diversity of Ghanaian Culture Through Performing Arts,” the six-day event aims to celebrate Ghana’s cultural wealth through drama, dance, music, and exhibitions. It also underscores theatre’s enduring role in storytelling, education, and national development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hon. Gomashie emphasised the importance of the festival in strengthening national identity and encouraging appreciation for Ghanaian creativity. She noted that the performing arts remain a powerful tool for preserving heritage while inspiring future generations.
This year’s edition carries special significance as it honours the legacy of the late playwright and theatre pioneer Mohammed Ben Abdallah, whose works shaped contemporary Ghanaian theatre and continue to influence young performers.
Organisers say audiences can expect a vibrant line-up of performances from both established and emerging theatre groups, with productions highlighting traditional narratives as well as contemporary issues. The festival also features workshops and interactive sessions designed to build capacity within the creative sector.
Over the years, the Ghana Theatre Festival has become a cornerstone of the country’s cultural calendar, providing a platform for artistic expression while uniting communities through shared cultural experiences.
The 2025 edition is expected to draw large audiences, including school groups, cultural enthusiasts, and international visitors eager to experience the richness of Ghanaian performing arts.
