KUMASI, Ghana — Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s 2028 flagbearer race.

Dr. Bawumia made the announcement during a strategic meeting held in Kumasi with all 47 Ashanti Region Constituency Chairmen, signaling the formal relaunch of his political career following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The gathering, which also included key regional executives, is seen as the first step in reviving Bawumia’s internal campaign efforts in the party’s traditional stronghold.

“He has asked for party unity,” a source close to the meeting told JoyNews’ Evans Nkum, confirming that Bawumia used the occasion to declare his candidacy and seek support.

Support from TESCON and Minority MPs

Bawumia’s comeback bid has quickly attracted support from grassroots and parliamentary wings of the NPP.

He is said to have held consultations with the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), the party’s student wing, who have pledged their backing. Additionally, more than 60 Minority Members of Parliament visited Bawumia’s private office in Accra earlier this week to express their solidarity.

“We are here to meet His Excellency and hear his views on the presidential primary,” said Sammi Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, in a video now circulating on social media.

“Fastest Path to Victory” — Miracles Aboagye

In a Facebook post, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for Dr. Bawumia, affirmed the momentum behind his campaign.

“DMB remains our fastest path to election 2028 victory,” Aboagye wrote, in what many view as a statement of confidence in Bawumia’s early positioning ahead of other contenders.

NPP Sets January 2026 for Presidential Primaries

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NPP has scheduled the party’s next Presidential Primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The decision was made at a NEC meeting held on June 17 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where members also discussed constitutional reforms proposed by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee.

With Dr. Bawumia’s public declaration and regional outreach now in full motion, the race for the 2028 NPP flagbearer slot is officially underway.

Observers expect other aspirants to announce their intentions in the coming months as the party gears up for a critical contest that will shape its future after the 2024 loss.
