Gareth Bale, the former Real Madrid and Wales star, is involved in a US-based group's effort to buy Plymouth Argyle.

The negotiations with the private equity firm are still in the early stages. Last month, Plymouth owner Simon Hallett said a previous plan to sell part of the club had fallen apart. Bale would follow in the footsteps of Luka Modric, who joined Swansea’s ownership group in November 2024. Modric took a small stake in April to put Welsh football in the spotlight worldwide.

Other high-profile athletes have joined club ownership groups. NFL legend Tom Brady became part of Birmingham City’s ownership, and Wrexham has earned huge revenue with founders Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Plymouth was demoted to the third tier last season after a difficult return to the Championship.

An optimistic move to bring Wayne Rooney as manager failed, and he resigned at season’s end to join Schalke in Germany. On June 13, Tom Cleverley, a former Manchester United player and Watford’s manager, was appointed as Plymouth’s new head coach.

It remains unclear what role Bale will have at the club if the sale goes through. Bale, who retired in 2023, is 35 and last played for Southampton and Tottenham.
