Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. to Reopen on May 29 After Fraud Probe
The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C. is set to reopen on May 29, 2025, after being temporarily closed due to a visa fraud investigation. The Foreign Ministry has deployed new staff and IT reforms to restore operations and integrity.

Accra, May 27, 2025 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced the reopening of the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, May 29, 2025, following a brief closure prompted by a high-profile visa fraud investigation.
In a press release issued today, the Ministry explained that the reopening comes after a comprehensive internal shake-up. This includes the recall of all home-based staff and the suspension of local staff implicated in the scandal. A new team of experienced diplomats has since been deployed to restore normal operations, reinforce integrity, and implement urgent structural reforms.
Website and IT System Overhauled
As part of efforts to enhance transparency and prevent future abuse, the embassy’s website and payment systems have undergone a complete overhaul. An Information Technology (IT) team has reconfigured all platforms to eliminate unofficial and unauthorized payment links that were previously used in the fraudulent scheme uncovered during the audit.
Measures to Clear Backlog
The Ministry assured the public that all necessary systems are in place to clear any application backlog caused by the temporary closure.
Accountability Measures and Contacts
The Ministry emphasized that the “unfortunate circumstances” that led to the closure have been formally referred to the Auditor-General and the Attorney-General for further action. This move reinforces the government’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and protecting Ghana’s international image.
