The government has imposed curfews and a total ban on the possession of arms and ammunition in the Bawku and Nalerigu townships and their surrounding areas following recent violence, including the killing of two students at Nalerigu Senior High School.

In separate statements issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the Ministry of the Interior announced that, on the advice of the North East and Upper East Regional Security Councils and by Executive Instrument, curfew hours have been set from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily in both locations until further notice.

A total ban on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons has also been announced. The government warned that any individual found violating the directive will be arrested and prosecuted.

“Government calls on the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace,” the Ministry said.

These heightened security measures follow the fatal shooting of two students at Nalerigu SHS by unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Saturday, July 26. The attack, widely condemned, has been linked in local speculation to the longstanding Bawku chieftaincy conflict, although authorities have not confirmed a motive.

In response, the government has begun the evacuation of students from educational institutions in Nalerigu, Bawku, and other affected areas. A statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that the curfews are aimed at creating a safe environment for these evacuations.

“Further to the Ministry of the Interior’s announcement… government wants to stress that the curfew is intended to create an environment conducive to the evacuation of all students… some of whom have been unfortunately targeted in the conflict,” he said.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also announced that the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to both towns as part of an intensified operation to restore calm. He indicated that the role of the military had shifted from peacekeeping to peace enforcement, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

“In response to the recent escalation of violence… the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order,” the statement read. “We assure the public that all necessary measures will be taken to protect lives and property.”

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and stability in the affected regions and has urged all stakeholders to support the effort through dialogue and restraint.

The curfews remain in force as security personnel continue to monitor the situation.
