Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, a senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, has died under circumstances currently under investigation by the authorities.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba and was reported to the police by the hotel manager. According to the Kogi State Police Command, the lecturer was in the company of a 22-year-old 200-level female student of the university at the time of his death.

Police spokesperson, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lokoja. He described the development as tragic and noted that an autopsy has been conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Preliminary reports indicate that the student, identified as Gloria Samuel, had rushed to the hotel reception to raise an alarm after the lecturer reportedly collapsed in their room. The hotel management promptly contacted the police, and Dr. Ibikunle was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The deceased, who was married with children, was a lecturer in the Department of Social Studies Education. Unconfirmed reports suggest he may have consumed multiple energy drinks prior to the incident.

The female student was taken into police custody and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to establish the facts surrounding the case.

The university community and broader public await the outcome of the investigation, as the case continues to generate widespread attention and concern.
