‘Precious Lives Must Not Be Lost’: Mahama Calls for Action on Child Welfare

President John Dramani Mahama has renewed calls for stronger global efforts to safeguard the rights and well-being of children, stressing that the world must act urgently to protect the most vulnerable.
Sharing his reflections on his official social media pages, Mahama recounted his participation in the annual prayer service for peace and children’s welfare, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“My heart was heavy, yet filled with hope, as I joined leaders and faith partners,” he wrote, noting the immense challenges facing children worldwide, particularly those trapped in conflict zones or deprived of basic opportunities.
The former Ghanaian leader emphasised that children should not have to suffer the loss of homes, dreams, or emotional security due to circumstances beyond their control. “We must act decisively to ensure they don’t carry scars forever,” he stressed.
Mahama linked his advocacy to the mission of the Lordina Foundation, which he co-founded with former First Lady Lordina Mahama. The foundation focuses on supporting orphans and vulnerable children, providing them with education, shelter, and opportunities for a brighter future. He expressed hope that with stronger partnerships and collaboration, such efforts could be scaled up globally.
Calling for collective responsibility, Mahama urged world leaders, faith-based groups, and civil society to unite in creating a safer, more empowering environment for children everywhere. “These are precious lives destroyed by circumstances beyond their control,” he said. “May our prayers manifest into tangible change for every precious child, everywhere.”
The prayer service, which draws political, religious, and humanitarian leaders from across the world, serves as a moment of reflection and commitment to advancing peace and child welfare amid the backdrop of global instability.
