Under the guidance of Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, NPP Members of Parliament responded by planning a protest march from Parliament to EOCO's headquarters. Wontumi's detention infuriated the MPs; some described it as a "political ambush" and a "national disgrace."
When NPP young supporters joined the MPs and started causing problems with police officials on EOCO grounds, the demonstration grew more intense. The demonstrators insisted on Wontumi's release right away; some claimed his detention was political.
Against the protests, EOCO has maintained that Wontumi's detention is part of an ongoing inquiry into alleged false activity. The agency has not publicly disclosed the specific charges or evidence against Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi is in custody currently; things are still under development. The NPP has promised to pursue his release and name clearing using all legal channels according to law.
