Kodua Frimpong Insists Akua Afriyie Rightfully Won 2024 Poll

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has strongly opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, insisting that the party’s candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, legitimately won the 2024 election.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, July 8, Mr Kodua accused the EC of attempting to subvert the will of the people and demanded that the Commission declare Akua Afriyie as the duly elected Member of Parliament.

“For us in the New Patriotic Party, we are resolute. We know our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures,” Mr Kodua stated. “Under no circumstances will we accept or participate in any rerun. We have won the election.”

The NPP General Secretary called on the EC to obey what he described as a court directive to complete the collation of results and officially announce Akua Afriyie as the winner.

The EC had earlier indicated that a rerun was necessary due to irregularities involving the lack of validation on some scanned polling station results. The planned rerun, scheduled for July 11, is meant to bring clarity to the disputed December 2024 parliamentary contest.

However, the NPP argues that their agents, together with EC officials, had verified and signed the results at all affected polling stations and that there is no legal or procedural basis for a rerun.

Mr Kodua described the EC’s decision as unjust and warned that any further delay in declaring Akua Afriyie the victor violates the democratic rights of the people of Ablekuma North.

The Electoral Commission has not yet issued a formal response to the NPP’s challenge.
