Court Clears Path for Ablekuma North Election Rerun

EC Set to Hold Rerun in 19 Polling Stations on July 11

Court Clears Path for Ablekuma North Election Rerun

The High Court has dismissed an application by Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, aimed at stopping a scheduled rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Ali Baba Abature, labelled the request for an interim injunction as “unmeritorious,” affirming that the Electoral Commission (EC) must be allowed to carry out its constitutional duty. The rerun, set for Friday, July 11, 2025, is meant to resolve the long-standing electoral dispute stemming from the December 7, 2024, general elections.

In her application, Nana Akua Afriyie argued that the EC’s decision to rerun elections contradicted a High Court ruling issued on January 4, 2025, which ordered the Commission to collate outstanding results from 62 polling stations and declare a winner based on the votes already cast.

Her legal team, led by NPP lawyer Gary Nimako, cited a January 27 press release from the EC and statements made in Parliament by Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare, suggesting that only three polling station results were outstanding at the time.

However, the court maintained that the EC has a constitutional obligation to ensure the people of Ablekuma North are duly represented in Parliament, and that completing the process through a rerun is in the public interest.

With this ruling, the Electoral Commission is now free to proceed with the rerun on July 11 in the affected polling stations—paving the way for a final determination of the parliamentary seat for Ablekuma North.
