Ghana Secures $30m China Grant for Modern Aflao Market
Project to Boost Cross-Border Trade Between Ghana and Togo

Ghana has received a $30 million grant from the Chinese government to construct a modern market in Aflao, a key commercial town in the Volta Region.
The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister and North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who confirmed the signing of the agreement via a post on X (formerly Twitter). The deal was signed on July 7, 2025, at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with Mr Ablakwa signing on behalf of the government and Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa representing China.
The grant is in fulfilment of a campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama and is expected to transform Aflao into a vibrant trade hub, strengthening economic links between Ghana and neighbouring Togo.
“This new, befitting modern market will serve as a powerful economic hub for West African trade,” Mr Ablakwa stated. He noted that the project would not only enhance trade between Ho and Lomé but also improve livelihoods across the Volta Region and beyond.
Drawing parallels to past efforts, Mr Ablakwa recalled the Kotokuraba Market project in Cape Coast, also funded by a Chinese grant during the Mills/Mahama administration. He praised China’s continued partnership in Ghana’s development, especially in infrastructure.
The construction of the Aflao market is set to begin soon, highlighting the deepening cooperation between Ghana and China in areas of economic development and trade facilitation.
