Late Highlife music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu aka Daddy Lumba

Ghana will gather to honour the memory of highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, with a one-week memorial service scheduled for 30th August 2025 in Accra. The announcement was made by the late musician’s family via DL FM, his personal radio station.

The main funeral rites will take place in Kumasi at a later date, which the family says will be communicated in due course.

Daddy Lumba passed away on 26th July 2025 at the Bank Hospital in Accra, aged 60, after a short illness. His death has plunged the nation into mourning, with tributes pouring in from fans, industry colleagues, and political leaders, including current and former presidents.

In his honour, the Creative Arts Agency, in partnership with the Fosu family, staged a national candlelight vigil at Independence Square on 2nd August 2025. The event, held from 6 pm to 10 pm, saw thousands in attendance and coincided with international tributes in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, and several other parts of Ghana.

Widely celebrated as one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons, Daddy Lumba’s career spanned almost four decades, producing over 33 albums and timeless hits such as Theresa, Aben Wo Ha, Ohia Asɛm, Playboy, Biribi Gyegye Wo, Seese Wo Se, Woho Kyere, and Awoso. His artistry and influence on highlife earned him multiple honours, including several Ghana Music Awards, the Legend of Entertainment Award (EMY Africa) in 2018, and a Presidential Grand Medal earlier this year.

The upcoming one-week memorial is expected to draw fans, fellow musicians, and creative industry leaders in a grand celebration of Daddy Lumba’s enduring legacy and his profound impact on Ghanaian music and culture.
