Osun Monarch Flees Palace Over Alleged Threat from Speaker Egbedun

The Alasi of Asi, Oba Isaac Oyewale, has reportedly vacated his palace after receiving an alleged death threat from the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun.

The crisis followed the emergence of a leaked three-minute phone call between Speaker Egbedun and Queen Idowu, one of the monarch’s wives. In the conversation, Egbedun, speaking in Yoruba, launched verbal attacks against the king and warned him against returning to Asi town.

“This is Speaker Egbedun,” he said. “If that king values his life, he should stay away from Asi. If he comes, I will have him beaten and stripped of his crown.”

In response, Oba Oyewale, through his legal counsel, Barrister K.A. Ngwoke, filed a petition dated July 29, 2025, addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI. The petition called for urgent intervention over what the monarch described as a serious threat to his life.

The petition also accused Speaker Egbedun of orchestrating the unlawful arrest and detention of a local resident in Asi, allegedly attempting to coerce the individual into making false claims against the king. It further claimed that the Speaker directly called Queen Idowu to relay his threats.

“Our client has been unable to return to his palace due to the threat issued by Egbedun, who, as a public officer, is expected to uphold the law,” the petition read.

Reacting to the allegations, Speaker Egbedun denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he respects traditional institutions. However, he alleged that Oba Oyewale had regarded him as a political threat since his relocation to the community.

“About three weeks ago, my convoy was attacked by thugs at Okuku on my way back to Asi. I contacted the Commissioner of Police and the DSS Director, who moved swiftly and arrested one suspect. Later, I received a call from the Alasi, warning me not to allow the suspect to be arraigned or others to be arrested,” Egbedun stated.

He added, “I have deep respect for traditional rulers and elders, but not at the expense of my safety. I apologise to my supporters for my emotional remarks, but there’s always a reason behind every reaction.”

The incident has sparked political reactions across party lines. The All Progressives Congress (APC), through its Director of Media, Chief Kola Olabisi, condemned Egbedun’s conduct, describing it as “rude, obnoxious, and unacceptable.”

In contrast, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defended Egbedun. The state chairman, Sunday Bisi, accused the APC of exploiting the situation for political gain, warning the opposition against politicising sensitive issues
