In a poignant gesture of solidarity, Pope Leo XIV has extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Ghana following the devastating military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on August 6, 2025. The tragedy, which occurred in the Ashanti Region, has shaken the nation and drawn international sympathy, including a solemn tribute from the Vatican.
The Pope’s tribute was delivered via a telegram signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, and addressed to Bishop Matthew K. Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference. The message read:
“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV sends his condolences upon the deaths of the ministers, government officials, and all who perished in the military helicopter crash. Entrusting the souls of the deceased to the mercy of Almighty God, and with prayers for those who mourn their loss, especially their families, the Holy Father assures the nation of his spiritual closeness at this difficult time.”
The Z-9 military helicopter was en route to Obuasi on an assignment linked to illegal mining operations when it went down in a densely forested area. All eight onboard—three crew members and five passengers—perished. Among the victims were:
Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence
Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment
Senior military officers and government officials
The crash has prompted a full-scale investigation, with the black box recovered and DNA analysis underway to confirm identities.
President John Mahama led a solemn tribute, announcing a state funeral scheduled for August 15. The government has declared three days of national mourning, with vigils and memorials held across the country.
International bodies including the United Nations, African Union, and ECOWAS have issued statements of condolence. Former presidents, opposition leaders, and civil society groups have joined in mourning the fallen patriots.
The tragedy has reignited conversations around aviation safety, emergency preparedness, and the risks faced by public servants in high-stakes missions. As the nation prepares to lay its heroes to rest, Pope Leo XIV’s message serves as a reminder of the shared humanity that binds global communities in times of sorrow.
