The Director of Research and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Sammy Darko II, has dismissed reports circulating on some media platforms that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has cleared former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, of corruption allegations.

In a social media post, Mr Darko described such reports as misleading and “fake,” blaming them on the rush by some outlets to generate trends.

“A tabloid called Pulse started this fake story, then more fake portals joined. In a bid to get trends, TV3 and Graphic Online also joined. I can’t stop laughing,” he wrote.

According to him, the matter has only resurfaced because the newly appointed leadership of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has requested the docket for review. He emphasised that the OSP had not issued any fresh statement that differs from its previous position on the matter.

“OSP simply recounted what we have narrated over the years on the matter. Suddenly, some even say FBI has cleared Madam Dapaah as if FBI is a court in Ghana or that the OSP has stated anything new or different from its conclusions on the case. Eiii, our media,” Mr Darko added.

His reaction follows widespread reports by some major news portals suggesting that the FBI had found no evidence of corruption in relation to the cash discovered at Madam Dapaah’s residence. The OSP, however, has consistently maintained that its findings were handed over to EOCO for further investigation into potential money laundering offences.

The former minister resigned in July 2023 after it emerged in court documents that huge sums of money, including over US$1 million and significant amounts of euros and cedis, had been stolen from her residence by domestic staff. The revelations sparked public outrage and triggered investigations by both the OSP and EOCO.

Mr Darko’s clarification appears to put to rest the recent wave of speculation, reinforcing that neither the OSP nor the FBI has issued any conclusive clearance of Madam Dapaah.
