Akwa Ibom SWAT Officer Rejects ₦800,000 Bribe in Armed Robbery Case

A senior officer attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ebong Thompson, has been commended for rejecting a bribe of ₦800,000 offered in a bid to secure the release of a suspected armed robber and suppress evidence related to the crime.

This was disclosed in an official statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

According to the statement, the primary suspect, 53-year-old David Samuel Isaac, was arrested after a Samsung smartphone stolen at gunpoint was traced to him. Investigations further revealed that Isaac is a habitual offender, having previously been arrested and charged in court for a similar offence in 2024. He reportedly resumed criminal activity shortly after being released.

The second suspect, Emmanuel Mendie Peter, was apprehended at the SWAT Unit’s office while attempting to offer the bribe in exchange for Isaac’s release. His offer was promptly rejected, and he was taken into custody.

“All officers involved in the investigation were commended by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, for their integrity and professionalism,” the statement read.

While addressing personnel during the Command’s monthly briefing, CP Azare praised CSP Thompson and his team for upholding the values of the Nigeria Police Force and urged other officers to emulate their exemplary conduct.

The Command also issued a warning to the public, advising individuals to desist from any attempts to obstruct or influence police investigations, emphasizing that such actions are criminal and will be prosecuted accordingly.

The case remains under active investigation, and both suspects are currently in custody pending further legal action.
