Lagos, Nigeria – APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s busiest container port, welcomed the "Kota Oasis", the first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered containership to berth in West Africa.

The arrival of the eco-friendly vessel represents a pivotal milestone in the region’s transition to greener, more efficient shipping practices.

A Giant in Green Shipping

Owned by Pacific International Lines (PIL) and flying the Singaporean flag, the Kota Oasis is a next-generation vessel measuring 260 meters in length and 46 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 77,850.

It is the first in PIL’s new "O" class series and can carry up to 8,200 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). Importantly, the ship is equipped with dual-fuel capabilities, operating on both LNG and future-ready bio-methane, drastically reducing its carbon emissions.

Revolutionary Engine Technology

The vessel features Win-GD’s X-DF engines with Intelligent Control through Exhaust Recycling (iCER). This advanced technology:

  • Minimizes methane slip,

  • Uses low-pressure gas for fuel efficiency,

  • Emits virtually no sulfur oxides or particulate matter,

  • Complies with IMO Tier III standards, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.

These features make the Kota Oasis one of the most environmentally responsible vessels in international shipping.

APM Terminals Apapa: A Gateway for Sustainable Trade

Steen Knudsen, Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, praised PIL for choosing Nigeria as a key stop in its route. He noted that:

“This visit aligns with our ambition to lower carbon emissions in port operations and support Nigeria’s green trade objectives.”

He added that faster port turnarounds — enabled by improved infrastructure — allow vessels to sail at lower speeds, further reducing emissions across their voyage.

APM Terminals is investing in infrastructure upgrades to accommodate larger vessels, increase capacity, and improve trade logistics in Nigeria.

PIL’s Commitment to Nigeria and West Africa

Olawunmi Akinyemi, Head of Operations for PIL Nigeria, called the Kota Oasis’s arrival a proud moment:

“This shows our dedication to innovation, sustainability, and strengthening trade links across Nigeria and the broader West African region.”

The docking of the Kota Oasis symbolizes a new chapter in maritime logistics for Nigeria, one where green technology, economic growth, and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
