Bawumia Donates GH₵410k to NPP’s Owusu Afriyie
Former Veep Backs Defiant Candidate Ahead of Ablekuma North Rerun

Former Vice President and immediate past flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown his weight behind the party’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, by donating GH₵410,000 to support her campaign in the upcoming election rerun.
The financial gesture comes at a crucial time, as Owusu Afriyie has decided to contest Friday’s rerun election in 19 polling stations, despite the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) officially boycotting the process.
According to sources close to Dr Bawumia, the donation reflects his continued commitment to supporting the NPP at all levels, especially during critical moments such as the current electoral dispute in Ablekuma North.
“As the immediate past flagbearer, Dr Bawumia sees it as a duty to support the party’s efforts in every form,” a source from his office told reporters.
Ms Owusu Afriyie has insisted that she won the original December 2024 parliamentary elections and remains confident of victory in the rerun.
“We are going into this election prepared. I won the election in December and I will win again to prove to Ghanaians that the people of Ablekuma North chose me,” she declared earlier this week.
Dr Bawumia’s support is expected to energise Owusu Afriyie’s campaign and bolster the morale of her supporters as they gear up for what is anticipated to be a tightly contested rerun.
Observers believe the donation could signal growing divisions within the party’s top leadership over the NEC’s decision to boycott the rerun, and may have ripple effects on internal party unity.
The rerun, ordered by the Electoral Commission following disputes over the initial results, continues to stir controversy within NPP ranks as the constituency braces for another showdown at the polls.
