Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured victory in the Akwatia by-election, clinching a hard-fought win over the opposition’s Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to certified results released by the Electoral Commission, Bediako polled 18,199 votes out of a total of 33,819 valid ballots cast. His closest challenger, Asumadu of the NPP, received 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) came a distant third with only 82 votes. A total of 303 ballots were rejected.

The by-election, held on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, was triggered by the death of sitting MP Ernest Kumi earlier this year. It drew intense national attention as both major parties deployed significant resources and top campaigners in a bid to secure the pivotal swing seat.

Voting took place across 119 polling stations, with polls closing at 5 p.m. Counting and sorting proceeded under the watch of party agents, election observers, and security officials.

Following the announcement of results, jubilant NDC supporters took to the streets of Akwatia in celebration, dancing and chanting victory songs late into the night.

In his victory speech, Bediako thanked voters for their confidence and pledged to honour the legacy of the late MP. “This is a win for the people of Akwatia. I am committed to working tirelessly to continue the development agenda started by Hon. Ernest Kumi and to bring even greater progress to our constituency,” he stated.

Political analysts are already weighing the broader implications of the result. Akwatia, often regarded as a bellwether constituency, has historically swung between the NDC and NPP. The NDC’s latest triumph is seen as a confidence boost for the governing party as it sets its sights on the 2028 general elections.

With his victory, Bernard Bediako Baidoo now assumes the role of MP for Akwatia, with expectations high from constituents eager to see continued infrastructure improvements, job creation, and social interventions.
