"The New Sankara?"

Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré is rejecting the West, delaying elections until 2029, and positioning himself as the heir to Thomas Sankara. But is this Pan-Africanism - or just another strongman era?

1. Should more African countries reject Western influence like Traoré?

"The New Sankara?"

Burkina Faso’s Young Junta Leader Declares War on the West

No elections. No apologies. Just raw anti-colonial fire.

Ibrahim Traoré is not your typical coup leader. At just 36, the military captain who seized power in Burkina Faso in 2022 has transformed himself into a cult-like figure - blending revolution, rejection of Western dominance, and Pan-African bravado into a dangerous new prototype of African leadership.

And now, he says democracy can wait until 2029.

French Troops Out.

Gold Contracts Renegotiated.

?? Russia Welcomed.

Ballot Boxes? Delayed… for five more years.

“He’s not just leading a country he’s performing a revolution,” say some.

But others warn: behind the fiery speeches is a familiar autocrat in rebel’s clothing.

“We don't want France. We don’t want the West telling us what to do anymore.”  - Traoré during a televised address from Ouagadougou

Under his watch, Burkina Faso has ejected French troops, embraced Russian military support, and suspended elections indefinitely. His government is accused of human rights abuses, press suppression, and covert assassinations of dissenters.

But among youth in rural areas, he's a messiah. Social media channels light up daily with his speeches, and murals across West Africa now bear his face beside Thomas Sankara, the martyred Burkinabé icon.

But here's the question:
Is this African liberation or dictatorship in disguise?
