Communications Minister, Hon Sam Nartey George

Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has launched a scathing response to DStv Ghana's recent statement rejecting calls to reduce subscription fees.

Taking to social media, the outspoken Minister accused the satellite TV operator of showing blatant disregard for the economic realities of Ghanaians and failing to act in good faith.

“I have read the release by DStv Ghana and taken full consideration that they vindicate my earlier position—that they simply do not take the Ghanaian people seriously enough,” Sam George posted.

Drawing comparisons with Nigeria, he noted that MultiChoice reversed similar price hikes there after state authorities and lawmakers intervened. “The Nigerian House of Representatives took the matter up and ordered a suspension of the increases. They complied,” he emphasised.

The Minister criticised DStv’s decision to raise prices by 15% in April 2025, despite favourable economic indicators at the time—including a 10% appreciation of the cedi, a 5% drop in inflation, and reduced fuel prices.

In a striking revelation, Hon. George disclosed that MultiChoice had offered an alternative proposal he rejected outright. According to him, the company suggested maintaining current pricing while withholding revenue transfers to headquarters—an idea he called illogical and tone-deaf to the concerns of Ghanaians.

“How does this proposal solve the real issue?” he asked, asserting that Ghanaians deserve fair prices, not corporate gamesmanship.

He also called on Ghanaian DStv staff to stand with the broader public in demanding fairness, while pledging his openness to continued dialogue—but only if it centres on price reduction.

“There has been a RESET and it demands a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the Ghanaian people... I remain open to constructive engagements that are centred on PRICE REDUCTION. Anything else is tangential and of no consequence,” he stated firmly.

The post ended with a patriotic sign-off: “For God and Country. ???”

This intensifies the standoff between the Minister and MultiChoice Ghana, and signals a growing regulatory pressure on foreign firms operating in essential services within the country.
