Dozens of music lovers, family members, and well-wishers gathered at the Independence Square on Saturday evening for a moving national candlelight vigil in honour of the late Highlife icon, Daddy Lumba.

The event, which ran from 6pm to 10pm, was marked by poignant tributes, poetry recitals, and stirring musical performances, drawing crowds who came to celebrate the enduring legacy of one of Ghana’s most beloved musicians.

The late star’s children delivered heartfelt messages, painting a picture of a father whose warmth, discipline, and passion for music deeply influenced their lives. “He was not just a legend to the world, but a hero to us at home,” one of the children said during the tribute, prompting a wave of applause and emotion across the square.

Music royalty and close collaborators joined the celebration of Lumba’s life and work. Highlife legends Pat Thomas and Kwabena Kwabena led powerful performances, with renditions of some of Lumba’s timeless duets that brought many in the audience to tears. Their presence underscored the deep reverence the music industry holds for Lumba, whose artistry helped shape the modern Ghanaian sound.

One of the night’s most talked-about moments was the appearance of award-winning rapper Sarkodie, who made a surprise entry midway through the vigil. While he did not perform, his presence was warmly acknowledged, as he paid his respects to a figure he has often credited as a musical inspiration.

The event also included stirring poetry recitals from young creatives, celebrating Lumba’s musical journey, lyrical genius, and cultural impact. Attendees lit candles in unison, creating a glowing sea of light that shimmered under the night sky — a powerful visual tribute to a man whose music illuminated generations.

Organised by a coalition of cultural stakeholders, family, and fans, the vigil followed a week-long series of commemorative activities, including the opening of a book of condolence at his DLFM studios and residence.

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, passed away last week after decades of dominating the Ghanaian music scene with hits that blended traditional rhythms with soulful melodies. Known for his unmatched vocals and poetic lyrics, Lumba leaves behind a legacy that continues to resonate both at home and across the diaspora.

Saturday’s vigil was not only a remembrance of the man and his music but a celebration of the powerful cultural bridge he built through song. As the night closed with a final chorus of “Aben Wo Ha”, attendees stood arm in arm — a testament to the unity and shared memory Lumba’s music has inspired.
