GNFS battles 2 major fires in Accra, over 50 structures destroyed
Twin Fires Ravage Accra, Dozens Displaced as Investigations Begin

Two separate fire outbreaks in Accra have caused significant damage to property and left dozens of residents homeless. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched investigations into the causes of both incidents.
The first fire occurred on Sunday, August 3, near the Madina Redco Flats. The GNFS received an emergency call at 12:36 p.m., and the first appliance from the Madina Fire Station arrived within minutes. Reinforcements from Legon, Abelemkpe, and the GNFS Headquarters brought the total to five fire engines.
Officials believe the blaze started at a washing bay before spreading rapidly through a cluster of wooden and metal structures. More than 50 structures and metal containers were destroyed, leaving several families displaced. No casualties were reported.
In the early hours of Monday, August 4, another fire erupted at the Accra Tourist Information Centre. The GNFS responded swiftly, deploying five fire tenders to the scene. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started in the kitchen of Rockz Waakye, a popular food vendor operating on the premises.
Although no injuries or fatalities were recorded in the second incident, considerable property damage was reported. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The GNFS has urged residents to remain alert, report potential fire hazards promptly, and adhere to basic fire safety measures, especially in densely populated and high-risk areas.
“These incidents underscore the importance of fire safety vigilance in both residential and commercial zones,” said a GNFS spokesperson.
Authorities continue to investigate both fires to determine their exact causes and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
