Government Disburses GH¢139 Million for LEAP: Cash Grant Increased by 25%
The Government of Ghana has released GH¢139.25 million to beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.
In a bold move to strengthen the country’s social protection net, the Government of Ghana has released GH¢139.25 million to beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme. This 96th payment cycle, covering March to April 2025, comes with a significant 25% increase in cash allowances, aimed at helping vulnerable households cope with rising living costs.
These cash transfers benefit over 350,000 households across all 260 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), directly supporting some of Ghana’s most vulnerable citizens.
According to Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, this increment demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving food security, school retention, and household incomes among the poor and marginalized. “This increase is timely and essential in protecting our most at-risk families, especially with current economic pressures,” she said.
The move comes on the back of a substantial LEAP budgetary boost in 2025. The government has earmarked GH¢953.5 million for the programme this year — a 30.8% increase from GH¢728.8 million in 2024.
Additionally, LEAP is poised to expand further following a nationwide reassessment, targeting an increase in beneficiaries from 350,000 to 400,000 households.
LEAP remains one of Ghana’s cornerstone social interventions, empowering households with modest but impactful support. Studies have shown that LEAP beneficiaries exhibit better health outcomes, improved school attendance, and increased participation in income-generating activities.
