He Found a Photo of Himself Online - But He Never Took It. Welcome to 2025
A Ghanaian student discovered a photo of himself online one he never took. As AI-generated identities spread, stories like this are becoming disturbingly common.

He’d Never Been to That Beach. But the Photo Looked Exactly Like Him.
Last week, a Ghanaian university student stumbled on something strange while scrolling TikTok.
A viral video from a travel page showed a young man standing on a beach in Greece. Same height. Same skin tone. Same face.
It was him. Or at least… it looked like him.
“But I’ve never left Ghana,” he told The HubWeb. “And I’ve never taken that photo. It felt like my identity had been stolen by something not human.”
Welcome to the Age of AI-Generated Identities
Experts say this is no longer rare. With tools like Midjourney, D-ID, and real-time face-swapping AI, creating fake-yet-convincing versions of people is as easy as typing a sentence.
And the consequences?
· People are being mistaken for individuals they’ve never met
· Fake videos are being used in romance scams and political attacks
· Even real memories are starting to be questioned
Why It Matters
Ghana and the world is entering an era where you might not own your own face anymore.
“We’re heading toward a post-truth identity crisis,” says a researcher from the University of Cape Coast. “In 2025, it’s no longer about proving what’s real it’s about who controls the version of you that people see online.”
