Fire outbreak
A fire erupted at Accra Timber Market on September 13, 2025, damaging wood and hardware shops. The Ghana National Fire Service swiftly contained and extinguished the blaze, with two firefighters injured but now stable. Nearby buildings were spared, and investigations are underway to identify the cause.
A major fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Accra Timber Market, located near the Ayalolo School.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was alerted at 1:17 a.m. and promptly arrived at the scene by 1:21 a.m.
In response, seven fire engines from key stations across Accra—including those at Accra City, the Regional Headquarters, Ministries, Circle, National Headquarters, Abelemkpe, and Legon—were dispatched. They were supported by a GNFS water tanker, along with two more tankers provided by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Ablekuma Municipal Assembly.
The fire primarily affected shops dealing in timber and hardware supplies. Fire crews managed to contain the blaze by 6:26 a.m., brought it under control by 6:37 a.m., and fully extinguished it by 11:44 a.m. During the operation, two firefighters sustained injuries—one from an electric shock and another from burns. Both received medical treatment and have since been discharged in stable condition.
Thanks to the prompt and coordinated response, surrounding structures, including the Ayalolo school complex, remained unharmed. Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong visited the site alongside senior officials to supervise the efforts and provide support.
The GNFS expressed gratitude to all partner agencies involved in the response. Investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the fire
