Heavy police deployment sparks tension ahead of Akwatia By-Election
Over 600 Officers Sent to Akwatia as Constituents Voice Mixed Reactions

Some residents of Akwatia in the Eastern Region have expressed unease over the heavy security deployment ahead of the constituency’s by-election slated for 2 September 2025.
Speaking on Akwatia Watch on Accra-based Channel One TV, hosted by Nana Tuffour Boateng, residents shared their mixed feelings about the situation. While some feared the large police presence could signal possible unrest, others maintained faith in the security services.
“Looking at the number of police officers coming here, I am getting a little bit scared… I thought it was going to be a peaceful something, a normal election, but with the number of Police here, it’s scary,” said Francis Agbeko, a local resident.
In contrast, another constituent, Otu, expressed confidence in the Ghana Police Service. “I expect a peaceful process. Their presence means they are ready to protect us,” he said.
As part of preparations, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 600 officers to the constituency, including personnel who recently completed a five-day intensive training programme. Police officials confirmed that 10 individuals have already been arrested in the area for possessing firearms.
The by-election follows the death of Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia. The Electoral Commission has begun printing ballot papers, which commenced on Wednesday, 20 August 2025.
The contest will be closely watched as Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) go head-to-head for the seat. With heightened security measures and political tension in the air, Akwatia’s by-election is shaping up as a key moment in Ghana’s political calendar.
