The administration of President John Dramani Mahama discontinued all paid satellite television subscriptions at Ghana’s presidential residence—saving taxpayers an estimated GH₵120,000 ($12,000) every month.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, the decision stemmed from a review of operational expenditures inherited at the Jubilee House. The audit revealed the government was incurring significant costs on multiple TV subscriptions, in addition to access to free local channels.

When we came to the Jubilee House, there were multiple subscriptions… When we took stock and did the calculations, we realised we were spending about GH₵120,000 monthly just on satellite subscriptions. President Mahama has cancelled all of that,” Kwakye Ofosu explained in a recent interview with GBC.

He further questioned the rationale behind such spending, especially when relatively minor public investments—such as fixing a GH₵1,000 water pump—could transform access to essential services in underprivileged communities.

The cost-cutting measure has been hailed by proponents of fiscal discipline as a symbolic but significant move towards prudent governance. It also aligns with broader efforts by the Mahama administration to reallocate scarce national resources toward pressing development needs.
