Mahama Demands Swift Justice for 2024 Election Violence
President orders IGP to expedite investigations and ensure perpetrators face the law

President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his call for swift justice over the violence that marred Ghana’s 2024 general elections, directing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to urgently conclude investigations and bring those responsible to justice.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue, held in Koforidua and organised by the National Peace Council, President Mahama stressed the need for accountability to restore public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
“The IGP, expedite investigations into these acts of electoral violence and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Mahama said. “The Attorney General is also working on a report to be presented to Cabinet for adequate compensation to be paid to victims and relatives of those affected by the violence.”
The high-level dialogue brought together political leaders, civil society groups, and peace-building organisations to assess the conduct of the 2024 polls and strategise on preventing future electoral disturbances.
Mahama also highlighted the significance of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), crediting it with reducing politically motivated violence.
“The disbandment of party vigilante groups through the passage of Act 999 was a step in the right direction that has helped to reduce politically motivated violence to some extent,” he noted.
The President’s remarks come amid mounting public pressure for justice, following reports of injuries and fatalities at several polling stations and collation centres during the December 2024 elections.
Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and delivering justice:
“We will not condone impunity. Justice and redress for victims remain central to our electoral and security sector reforms,” he assured.
As the nation looks to rebuild confidence in its electoral processes, many will be watching closely to see whether the President’s directives lead to concrete action.
