Majority Leader Cites Minority Leader for “Contempt of Parliament”
The Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has lodged a formal complaint with the Speaker of Parliament alleging that the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, committed contempt of Parliament.
According to Ayariga, Afenyo-Markin defied a resolution passed by Parliament on July 22, 2025, which removed him from Ghana’s delegation to the Economic Community of West African States Parliament (ECOWAS Parliament). Despite the resolution, Afenyo-Markin allegedly travelled to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and attended the ECOWAS session between September 25 and 28.
Invoking Order 31(o) of the Parliamentary Standing Orders, which states that any act that “affronts the dignity or authority of Parliament” constitutes contempt, Ayariga called on Speaker Alban Bagbin to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee for possible sanctions.
The Speaker acknowledged receipt of the complaint and said he will review the matter before deciding on appropriate action.
