Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie Defies NPP, Vows to Contest Rerun
Ablekuma North Candidate Declares Confidence Ahead of Controversial Polls

Despite her party’s official decision to boycott the rerun of parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North, New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie has declared her unwavering resolve to contest the vote scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
Speaking confidently ahead of the rerun, Madam Owusu Afriyie insisted that she had already won the original December 7, 2024, election and is only seeking to defend her rightful mandate.
“We are fully prepared. Tomorrow, we are going to this contest. We went for the election on 7th December, 2024, and I won this election with 34,613 votes. My opponent had 34,199. We collated this together; my polling agents and their polling agents went through all that,” she said.
According to her, results from 278 polling stations had been counted, giving her a clear lead of 349 votes, with just three polling stations yet to be declared.
In an emotive and spiritual tone, Owusu Afriyie added, “What I want to put on record is that darkness can never cover light. I am the light; I am the truth. I walk with the gracious God. The Lord is going to talk tomorrow; justice will prevail. I am contesting this election, and I am coming out victorious.”
Her stance sharply contrasts with the national leadership of the NPP, which has publicly rejected the Electoral Commission’s directive to rerun the election in 19 polling stations, branding the decision unjust and unnecessary.
While the party’s legal and political efforts to halt the rerun have so far been unsuccessful, Madam Owusu Afriyie’s declaration signals a significant split between her personal campaign and the NPP’s national directive.
The rerun has intensified political tensions in the constituency, with observers expecting a fiercely contested race despite the cloud of legal disputes and intra-party disagreement.
