In a milestone for agricultural industrialization in northern Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has announced the commissioning of a modern rice mill in Jadima, projected to create over 2,000 jobs and boost local rice production capacity by more than 30,000 metric tonnes annually.

The project, launched in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), is designed to strengthen the rice value chain while promoting economic inclusion. Special focus will be placed on empowering women, youth, and children, with training and employment opportunities tailored for them.

Speaking during a community durbar in Nalerigu, President Mahama said the rice mill is a cornerstone of the region’s shift from subsistence to commercial agriculture. “This facility represents dignity, independence, and progress for our farmers,” he noted. “It means fewer post-harvest losses, better incomes, and a stronger local economy.”

To secure stable markets, the National Buffer Stock Company has been directed to procure all rice from the mill for supply to secondary schools across Ghana. This move is expected to reduce reliance on imported rice and support national food security goals.

The president also disclosed plans to revive the Walewale watermelon factory, signaling a broader push to reinvigorate agro-industrial ventures in the region.

Local leaders have lauded the initiative as a lifeline for farming communities. “For the first time in decades, we see real commitment to transforming agriculture into a viable livelihood,” said one district chief. Construction of the facility is already underway, with operations expected to begin in early 2026.
