Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has officially entered the party’s flagbearer contest, becoming the first aspirant to file his nomination forms ahead of the 2028 general election.

Dr Agyepong submitted his application at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, where he was greeted by throngs of supporters and well-wishers. His early filing signals a strong intent to secure the party’s mandate as it prepares for a competitive primary season.

The NPP opened the window for flagbearer nominations on 29 July 2025, with the deadline set for 28 August 2025. The party has announced that its presidential primaries will be held on 31 January 2026 to determine who will lead the party into the 2028 polls.

In a related development, the NPP leadership has announced changes to its voter register for the upcoming primaries. A circular issued on Tuesday and signed by Mr William Yamoah, Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, confirmed the inclusion of new categories of party officials and dignitaries in line with Article 13(1)(11) of the party’s constitution and a resolution adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference on 19 July 2025.

The move, according to the party, is designed to ensure broader participation and a more representative selection process.
