NPP Reverses Boycott, Campaigns Ahead of Ablekuma North 19 Polling Stations Rerun
Party Rallies Behind Nana Akua Afriyie After Court Rejects Injunction

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially kicked off its campaign in the Ablekuma North Constituency ahead of the hotly anticipated parliamentary rerun set for Friday, July 11, 2025. The decision follows a dramatic U-turn by the party, which had previously vowed to boycott the process.
The rerun, involving 19 polling stations, was ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve disputes surrounding the December 2024 general election results in the constituency. The EC cited irregularities and concerns about result validation as the basis for its decision.
Initially, the NPP had rejected the call for a rerun, arguing that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had secured victory with a margin of 414 votes. The party even took legal action to stop the process, but the Accra High Court on July 8 dismissed the application for an injunction, ruling that the rerun must proceed.
At a press briefing on the same day, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reiterated the party’s stance that Afriyie was the rightful winner. “We are resolute and we know that our candidate won with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures,” Frimpong stated.
He added that despite their disagreement with the EC, the party would not be intimidated and had chosen to defend its electoral mandate at the polls. “We are not going to be intimidated,” he said, adding that the NPP’s National Executive Committee had resolved to participate fully in the rerun.
Accra-based Citi News' reporter, Fauzu Masawudu, who toured the constituency, confirmed that the NPP had begun active campaigning. Hundreds of party supporters were seen canvassing across the affected polling stations.
Many supporters said their confidence was reinforced by the fact that Nana Akua Afriyie’s picture remained on the ballot paper, prompting them to go all out ahead of the election.
As tension lingers over the rerun, the Ablekuma North parliamentary contest remains one of the most closely watched races in Ghana’s current political landscape.
