NPP Sets Sights on 2028: 99% of National Council Backs Early Presidential Primaries
Party fixes January 31, 2026, for flagbearer race in bid to unite early and gain electoral advantage

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken a bold step towards the 2028 general elections, with an overwhelming majority of its National Council members—99%—supporting a proposal to hold early presidential primaries.
Disclosing this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong explained that the move is aimed at ensuring internal stability and positioning the party strategically ahead of the next electoral cycle.
“Almost 99 per cent of the members of the National Council supported the proposal for early presidential primaries,” Mr. Kodua revealed, noting that the consensus was reached during a recent high-level meeting in Accra.
■ January 31, 2026: Mark the Date
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had earlier resolved on Tuesday, June 17, to set January 31, 2026, as the official date for the presidential primaries.
According to Kodua Frimpong, the timeline gives the party and its eventual flagbearer ample time to mobilize resources, consolidate support, and define a clear campaign vision going into the 2028 elections.
“We believe that electing our presidential candidate early gives the party enough time to rally behind the candidate and build momentum,” he said.
■ Unity Above All
Addressing concerns that early primaries could spark internal wrangling, Mr. Kodua dismissed such fears, stressing that the party leadership is committed to a transparent and inclusive process that puts the party’s interest first.
“This is not about individuals or factions—it’s about the NPP’s long-term strength and success,” he said. “We are confident this decision will strengthen our chances in 2028.”
He added that the party will engage all relevant stakeholders to ensure internal cohesion is maintained throughout the process.
As the NPP gears up for the presidential race, high-profile contenders are expected to declare their intentions in the coming months—setting the stage for what could be a fiercely contested but strategic internal contest.
