Akyem Wenchi – Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Akyem Wenchi Durbar Grounds on Sunday for the 40-Day Observance of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, with leading figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) turning out in force to honour his memory.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and 2024 NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who attended with his running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, led the delegation. They were joined by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, and several sitting MPs, including Patrick Boamah, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Michael Okyere Baafi, Abena Osei Asare, and Sammy Awudu.

National executives, among them General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, also paid their respects. Former MPs Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong are expected to attend later in the day.

Speaking exclusively to Channel One TV, Justin Kodua described Kumi’s death as a heavy blow to the party.

“Considering how he had worked hard and the difficulties he went through, even after he won the election, and for him to have lost his life is a big blow to the party. Coming Tuesday, we are optimistic that the good people of Akwatia will remember the intimidation Ernest went through to reward their son Solomon Asumadu,” he noted.

Kumi, who passed away only weeks after securing his parliamentary seat, is remembered as a rising politician whose resilience and service left a lasting mark on both his constituents and his party. His observance has drawn widespread tributes across the political spectrum, cementing his legacy in Ghana’s political landscape.
