Panic as Train Coach Detaches on Lagos-Abeokuta Rail Line, Disrupting Morning Commute

Tension gripped commuters and residents on Thursday morning after a train coach detached from its compartments along the Ladipo axis of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, causing a temporary halt in rail movement and sparking confusion in the area.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. as the train, traveling from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos, experienced a sudden disconnection of its rear coach. The disruption lasted over 30 minutes.
Eyewitness Oloruntoba Omodele described the moment as chaotic but confirmed that there were no injuries. “Everyone was shocked by what happened, but thankfully, no lives were lost,” he said.
Ladipo, a known traffic hotspot, has seen a series of transport-related mishaps in recent years—raising fresh concerns about rail and road safety in the densely populated area.
Emergency responders were said to have arrived promptly to manage the situation, ease traffic congestion, and clear the tracks.
While officials are yet to provide details on the mechanical failure, transportation experts are calling for an urgent investigation and stricter rail maintenance protocols to prevent future occurrences especially along high-traffic routes like the Lagos-Abeokuta corridor.
