Seven police officers have been taken into custody in Imo State after accusations of extortion, harassment, and unprofessional behavior during a checkpoint inspection ordered by the police chief, Aboki Danjuma.
The officers were detained after being spotted for different misconducts while on duty outside their stations.
These arrests come as the Imo State Police work to clean up their procedures and regain the trust of the people they serve. A statement from DSP Okoye Henry, the police spokesman, confirmed the arrests and said disciplinary steps are being taken according to police rules.
The police chief's statement explained that on June 17, 2025, CP Danjuma toured checkpoints across the state. He checked stations along key roads like Owerri–Onitsha, Owerri–Port Harcourt, and Owerri–Umuahia. The visit came after several reports and complaints from citizens about officers asking for bribes or behaving badly during duties.
During the tour, CP Danjuma spoke with officers at different posts. He talked about the importance of discipline, honesty, and respecting people's rights. He warned that anyone caught extorting, intimidating, or misbehaving will face strict punishment, which could include losing their job and criminal charges.
After the inspection, seven officers were singled out and arrested for different wrongdoings. Police are now handling their cases following proper procedures. More updates will come soon.
The police boss also made a point to meet with drivers and commuters. He told them not to pay bribes or let officers search their phones without permission. He said such acts are illegal and cannot be tolerated.
To boost trust and hold officers accountable, CP Danjuma gave out emergency contact numbers for the police’s X-Squad and Complaint Response Unit. He asked the public to report any misconduct quickly. Every report will be taken seriously, kept private, and responded to professionally.
The police chief also reinforced his commitment to fixing the force. He promised that under his leadership, the police in Imo State will focus on honesty, fairness, and serving the people properly.
