Zimbabwe Mourners Attacked: 19-Year-Old Arrested After Deadly All-Night Funeral Vigil
A prayer vigil in Mashavele Village, Chikombedzi turned tragic on August 3 when 19-year-old Liberty Sibanda launched a brutal attack, killing two mourners and injuring two others.
According to Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, the victims were gathered around a fire during the all-night funeral service when Sibanda suddenly emerged with a sharp weapon, fatally injuring one man in the neck. Two others suffered back wounds while trying to intervene.
Sibanda has been remanded in custody by the Chikombedzi Magistrates Court and faces charges of murder and attempted murder. His next hearing is set for August 21.
This incident follows another violent funeral attack in nearby Mukuwo Village, where an unidentified suspect killed a woman and injured three others. Police are appealing to the public for any information that could help bring the culprit to justice.
Authorities are urging communities to resolve disputes peacefully and reject violence.
