Stepmother and Father Arrested After Teen Girl Dies from Brutal Beating in Nyanga

A 38-year-old woman and the biological father of a teenage girl have been arrested for the brutal assault that led to the death of the 17-year-old in Nyanga, eastern Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) identified the suspects as Maria Chibego, the girl’s stepmother, and Chakupiwa Kamupira, her biological father. They were arrested in connection with the death of Rumbidzai Kamupira on July 14, 2025.
According to a statement posted by the ZRP on X, Rumbidzai was beaten with open hands and a switch by Chibego after failing to return home on the night of July 13. Her father, Kamupira, also participated in the beating, using a switch.
“The victim died upon admission at a local clinic,” the police said.
Rumbidzai reportedly collapsed after the assault and was rushed to a nearby clinic, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Authorities have not revealed where she spent the previous night, and investigations are ongoing. Both suspects have yet to enter a plea.
The incident has left the local community in shock, with many struggling to comprehend the events that led to the teenager’s tragic death.
