Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has defended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold early presidential primaries, urging party members to support what he described as a strategic move in the best interest of the party’s future.

Speaking on Accra-based news channel Channel One TV’s Big Issue on Saturday, Aboagye backed the National Council’s approval of January 31, 2026, as the official date for the party’s next presidential primaries. He emphasized that the decision reflects a broader vision for unity and effective planning ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“It is in the interest of the party and anybody who has the NPP at heart to support this idea,” Aboagye stated. “We are reducing the picture to individual interest, and that is a problem. The National Council is looking at the bigger picture.”

● "Sacrifice the Few for the Greater Good"

Aboagye cautioned that personal ambitions should not take precedence over party unity and strategic coherence. He warned that prioritizing individual preferences could stall the party’s progress and deepen internal rifts.

“If you are running a group and you decide to rely on pure individual interest, you will never make progress,” he said. “Our views will always differ. But we must be able to sacrifice the few for the greater good.”

Context and Internal Reactions

His remarks follow internal criticism over the early timeline announced by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah, who explained that the January 31, 2026 date was a recommendation from the Constitution Review Committee and subsequently ratified by the National Council.

Koduah also clarified that the decision will not be subjected to another vote at the delegates’ conference, further fueling debate among party members.

Despite the mixed reactions, key figures including Aboagye have insisted that early primaries are essential to avoid last-minute internal conflicts, provide ample time for party cohesion, and prepare adequately for victory in the 2028 elections.

The NPP’s decision marks a significant shift in its election calendar, with party leaders now focusing on early resolution of leadership contests as a tool for stability and strategic planning.
