EFCC to Appeal Court’s Acquittal of Ex-Governor Fayose in N6.9bn Money Laundering Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to appeal the judgment of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, which acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of money laundering charges.

Fayose was re-arraigned on July 2, 2019, alongside his company, Spotless Investment Limited, on an 11-count charge involving alleged money laundering and theft amounting to N6.9 billion.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 16, the EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and stated that it has instructed its legal team to file an appeal against the verdict.

Justice Aneke, in his ruling, upheld Fayose’s no-case submission and dismissed all charges, stating that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case that required the defendant to open his defence.

Fayose had been on trial for alleged financial misconduct during his time as governor of Ekiti State
