Ex-Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff Claims Peter Obi Won Lagos Due to Igbo Population

Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has claimed that Peter Obi’s victory in Lagos State during the 2023 presidential election was largely due to the high population of Igbos residing in the state.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Sheriff dismissed the idea that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that the ADC has no control over any state and therefore lacks the political structure to win a presidential election.

When the anchor pointed out that Peter Obi’s Labour Party had no state under its control but still managed to secure the highest number of votes in Lagos, Sheriff responded:

“The problem with Peter Obi is that he ran based on his party and his tribe—the Igbos. They voted for him. They will always do that.”

Pressed further on why Obi won Lagos, a state outside the South-East, Sheriff said:

“There are more Igbos in Lagos than any other tribe. I’ve lived in Lagos most of my life since I returned from England in 1980. Lagos is occupied by the Igbos.”

When asked if any Yorubas voted for Obi, he added:

“If they did, they are very few.”
