Former Education Minister Dr. Evelyn Carter was honoured this week for her outstanding contributions to education in South Los Angeles. The award, presented by the South LA Educational Alliance, recognizes Dr. Carter’s transformative impact on local schools and her enduring commitment to equity in education.

Dr. Carter, who served as Education Minister from 2016 to 2020, was credited with implementing pioneering reforms that have had a lasting impact on underserved communities. Her work helped improve student achievement, increase access to educational resources, and promote culturally relevant curriculum initiatives that reflect the diverse backgrounds of South LA’s student population.

"Dr. Carter’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of our school communities," said Tanya Delgado, Executive Director of the South LA Educational Alliance. "Her leadership didn’t end when she left office — she continues to mentor, advocate, and invest in our schools, making her a beacon of hope and excellence."

The ceremony, held at the Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet School, featured performances by local student groups and a keynote address from Dr. Carter herself. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of collective action in education and credited local educators and families for their resilience and innovation.

"This recognition is not mine alone," Dr. Carter said. "It belongs to every teacher who stayed late to help a struggling student, every parent who pushed for better opportunities, and every young person who dares to dream big in the face of adversity."

Since leaving public office, Dr. Carter has remained deeply involved in education through her nonprofit, Bridges to Brilliance, which supports academic enrichment programs and leadership training for youth across Los Angeles County.

Her continued efforts underscore a lifelong dedication to education that extends far beyond policy and into the lives of those most affected by systemic inequities.

The event concluded with the unveiling of a scholarship fund in Dr. Carter’s name, aimed at supporting aspiring educators from South LA who are committed to giving back to their communities.

As the community came together to celebrate her achievements, one thing was clear: Dr. Evelyn Carter’s influence will be felt for generations to come.
