The Government of Ghana is taking a major step to strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure with the planned construction of a Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II). The initiative, led by the Ministry of Energy, aims to expand domestic gas processing capacity, reduce dependence on imported fuels, and provide more reliable power for industry and households.

At a ceremony in Accra, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor announced that an Implementation Committee has been inaugurated to oversee the new plant’s development. The committee has been given four weeks to prepare a detailed implementation roadmap. The project falls under Ghana’s broader energy transition strategy, which prioritizes local gas utilization as a cleaner and more cost-effective fuel source.

According to the Energy Ministry, the new facility will complement the existing Atuabo Gas Processing Plant and is expected to process natural gas from the Western Corridor fields, including Jubilee and TEN. Once operational, the GPP II will significantly increase the volume of gas available for power generation and industrial use.

The Ministry of Finance has estimated that the project could help Ghana save over US$500 million every two years in fuel import costs. In addition, it is expected to create more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing opportunities for engineers, technicians, and local suppliers.

The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas), which will manage the facility, said the plant is a vital part of the country’s ambition to become a West African energy hub. It also aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting energy self-sufficiency, value addition, and industrial growth.Government to Build Second Gas Processing Plant - Ghana

Once completed, the Second Gas Processing Plant is projected to strengthen Ghana’s energy security, stabilize electricity supply, and enhance export potential to neighboring countries.
