In a powerful diplomatic gesture, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Ghana's highest civilian accolade—the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana—by President John Dramani Mahama. The ceremony, held at Jubilee House on July 2, 2025, symbolized a renewed chapter in India–Ghana relations built on respect, collaboration, and shared development goals.
President Mahama lauded Prime Minister Modi for his "distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership," highlighting his role in advancing digital transformation, economic reforms, and South–South cooperation. The award celebrates Modi not only as a leader of India but as a visionary who has helped shape a more connected and equitable global south.
Accepting the honour, Modi described it as a "solemn responsibility" and dedicated it to the youth and cultural diversity of both nations. He emphasized that the recognition belongs to the people of India and Ghana, whose shared history and democratic values make bilateral collaboration both natural and necessary.
Modi's two-day state visit—his first to Ghana and the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over three decades—yielded several significant agreements:
Four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed:
Promoting cultural exchange and arts collaboration
Supporting research and training in Ayurveda and traditional medicine
Harmonizing trade standards for smoother commerce
Launching a structured ministerial dialogue platform for regular consultation
These developments reflect a deepening commitment to mutual growth and strategic cooperation.
Modi announced a set of initiatives aimed at empowering Ghanaian youth, including:
Expanded scholarships for students to study at Indian institutions
Training opportunities in healthcare, digital technology, agriculture, and defence
Support for Ghana’s Feed Ghana programme, which aligns with India’s experience in agricultural innovation and rural development
The emphasis on education and technology reflects both countries’ aspirations to build knowledge economies and reduce dependency on traditional development models.
Modi's visit underscored India's growing role as a strategic partner in West Africa and reaffirmed Ghana's openness to diverse partnerships grounded in mutual benefit. As Mahama noted, the honour bestowed upon Modi symbolizes Ghana’s recognition of the transformative potential of South–South alliances.
